Descript:
In the first decade of the twenty-first century, teachers have become increasingly responsive to the cultural diversity reflected in their classrooms, recognizing the benefits of acknowledging, in the curriculum, the varied groups that make up our society. When a cross-section of multicultural perspectives permeates the curriculum it validates all students' lives, helping learners recognize the universal values common to all cultures as well as appreciate the rich and positive differences between cultures.

In compiling Worlds of Wonder: Resources for Multicultural Children's Literature, Paula Kezwer recognizes that teachers are often at a loss about where to find appropriate resources to present a multicultural classroom perspective. In response to this need for easily accessible reference books she wrote Worlds of Wonder.

She has divided it into three parts. The first, "The Immigrant Experience," is broken down into chapters dealing with the experiences of members of various cultural groups as they mingle with the North American mainstream. The second, "The World Over," is divided according to the global geographic regions and culture of origin of the stories. Each citation in these two parts supplies a plot resumé and basic bibliographical data about the book to facilitate its acquisition. As a guide only, each book is categorized according to age appropriateness, although creative educators will find many uses for these books with learners of English as a second language of any age, including adults. The third index categorizes many of the books reviewed into 20 cross-cultural theme areas representing some of the most commonly conceived subject themes in both elementary and secondary schools, thereby helping teachers ensure that diverse cultural voices are easily integrated into their theme studies.

In reviewing the more than 370 multicultural titles, from picture books to young adult novels and from traditional folktales to the stories of contemporary immigrants that make up Worlds of Wonder, Paula Kezwer has created an essential reference for teachers and librarians who are searching for books that reflect the cultural diversity of students in today's classrooms.

Audience: Teachers, school and public librarians.

Review:

"Written for those seeking readily accessible information about multicultural children's books, Worlds of Wonder will be welcomed not only by teachers and curriculum coordinators, but by parents, librarians, adult educators, and all others who love children's literature. There is much to recommend this guide to adult educators as well, since many teachers have found that children's literature can be a wonderful resource in teaching language and literacy skills to adult learners of English."
